San
Ramon, 13km west of Sarchí, retains some
of the humanistic spirit that made it "the city of presidents
and poets." On Sundays families relax in the park after
worshiping at the elegant cruciform church, rebuilt after the
earthquake of 1924. Placards marking the birthplaces of great
political and literary figures---among them five former presidents
including José Figueres Ferrer and costumbrista poets
like Lisímaco Chavarría Palma (1878-1913) and
Féliz Ángel
Salas Cabezas (1908-1948)---are scattered throughout the modern
town. The part the town played in the fight for democracy,
education, culture, and the rights of the poor in Costa Rica
is memorialized
in its museum. Elderly people here have a quiet pride for their
humble yet revolutionary history, while the town's youth, more
oblivious to its history, simply refer to it as a close-knit
city with a safe, slow pace of life. Hostels in San Ramon |
