Holds 12.8% of Cuba's territory and 7.6% of the pop. The
area is a vast
prairie, of which 72% is suited for agr. Produces
12% of Cuba's sugar. The major economic activities are cattle
raising (practiced here since the early colonial period, using ½ of
the arable land, and earning the prov. the nickname "the
Texas of Cuba"), the cultivation of sugarcane (667,000
acres/269,935 ha) and rice (55,000 acres/22,259 ha), and the
production of
chromite. Meatpacking, pineapple canning, and other agr. processing;
14 sugar mills. Isl. keys off N shore, recently connected by
elevated road over water, provide 40 mi/64 km of shoreline
