Founded in the late 19th century, San Pedro de Macorís reached its peak during the first quarter of this century, when its sugar production enjoyed high prices on the international market as a result of the First World War. Many Europeans settled here, making it a very cosmopolitan urban center. Pan American flew its hydroplanes in regularly, at a time when this port enjoyed more commercial activity than the capital city. Today, San Pedro de Macorís is enjoying the limelight once again, with its model industrial free zone, its renowned university, Universidad Central del Este, and its undisputed contribution to major league baseball. It has supplied the greatest number of star players to both leagues, and the winter league games are always a major attraction at the local stadium. Hotels in San Pedro de Macoris |
