Two interesting destinations on the Paraguayan border are Bela Vista and Porto Murtinho, both to the west of Ponta Porã and harder to reach. Although it's not technically legal to cross the frontier into Paraguay at these places, they are worth visiting for the splendour of their natural setting alone. Both towns are served by bus from Dourados (a good day's journey), and from Jardim (8hr), which in turn is connected daily with Anastácio (4hr). In BELA VISTA you can explore the natural delights of the Piripacu and Caracol rivers, behind which are the unspoilt peaks of the Três Cerros and Cerro Margarida. There's also the extraordinary Nhandejara bridge , a water-eroded underground passage over 30m long. Most Brazilians, however, come here for the opportunity to buy imported goods: over the border is the Paraguayan town of Bela Vista, which has a road connection (a day's travel) to Concepción.
