People from Teresina tell a joke about their city: "Why do vultures fly in circles over Teresina? Because they glide with one wing and have to fan themselves with the other!" Brazil's hottest state capital, Teresina sits far inland on the east bank of the Rio Parnaíba, where it bakes year-round in an average temperature of 40°C (which means it regularly gets hotter than that). The rains, meant to arrive in February and last for three or four months, are not to be relied upon - though ironically, twice in the last fifteen years, they have actually flooded Teresina. Unless you're used to such heat, you'll find it tiring to move around; rooms with at least a fan, and preferably air-conditioning, are a necessity.
There's not a great deal to do or see in Teresina, but there's enough to occupy yourself for a day if you feel like breaking the long bus journey from Ceará.
