Salto.
This place is a surprise: a cattle town with a good art museum,
the Museo de Bellas Artes y Artes Decorativas. There's also
an anthropological museum and a history museum. Northeast of
town you'll find Termas del Arapey, one of several bathing
spas in the area. Salto dates from the gaucho days when cattle
were driven to town, slaughtered, preserved with salt and then
shipped to Cuba and Brazil (tours are available of two salting
plants that were built in the 1870s). 260 mi/415 km northwest
of Montevideo, on the Argentine border. Hostels in Salto |
